Not for mercenary reasons but for moral ones. They move in to a mutual range of attack knowing that they are putting themselves in harm’s way to protect those that they love. They fight for WHAT is right, not WHO is right. Even though we ourselves may not know what the horrors war are truly like, perhaps that is all the more reason to remember those who do.
